The year was 1994 and McDonald's created these NBA related french fry packages for their restaurants. These french fry holders were designed to commemorate players who had been named the MVP of the NBA. The series was called the "Nothing But Net MVP's". The series included players like Michael Jordan, Julius Erving, Bill Walton, Larry Bird, Moses Malone and Charles Barkley, who won the award for the 1993 season. McDonald's had a close sponsorship with the NBA at the time, and many will remember the classic Michael Jordan/Larry Bird horse commercials from this time period.
These classic fast food NBA memorabilia items are great examples of the sports design styles of the mid 1990's. The graphics are wild, colorful and bold, much like the uniform styles that were appearing at the time. The fronts of the packages featured a simulated basketball card of the player along with the McDonald's logo and the "Nothing But Net MVP's" logo.
The backs of these classic McDonald's french fry containers featured a head shot of the player along with the statistics from his NBA seasons and his team's logo. Some of the wild graphics from the front bled over to the backs, but the stats section is much more clear and straightforward.
These old school fast food packages are a great reminder of the design trends that were dominant in that time period. The design of sports graphics went through a major evolution during this time period and these packages represent some of those design styles very well. These fry packages were a great way to make McDonald's french fries even better!
